The Promethean spark,
flair for the innards
of the white-man’s world…
the workings
of interest rates,
stock exchange,
corporate mergers
and takeovers
and insider
trading and
banking
systems…and
how real estate firms
either succeed
or fail…
your windbreaker
against class
and caste
amidst which
you stood dazed
and convulsed
with pent-up
dreams of
Mosaic uplift
of your folk –
between Roseland,
Altgeld and Harvard,
Yale and Stanford…
not exactly
a question
of choice
but the bounden
need to be
armed and
forearmed
for this Armageddonian
brawl on
seedy
city
streets –
still,
charity
must first
be planted
on one’s own
turf,
and so
to Jomoland
where it all
began:
for basic lessons
we all need
to learn
from time
and place
to time;
the need
to plant
yams and
cocoyams,
plantains
and bananas
with equal
pride and
zest,
resist
a self-centered
tack to
leadership…
Harold Washington
done taught us
this much…
