Waptrick, a free wap site which allows users to download anything from hip-life music and weather forecasts, to interactive games on their mobiles, claims the number one spot on the list of fastest rising searches in Ghana for 2010.
The Google search results show the impact that mobile phones have had on Ghanaians. Mobile technology has given the everyday Ghanaian the ability to access the Internet, providing more people easier and quicker access to local and global information.
With Internet tools such as Waptrick.com, a mother in the Sunyani without access to a computer is able to download information just as easily as a technology expert in Silicon Valley. Because of mobile phone technology, more people than ever before have access to Internet on the go.
Ghanaians also demonstrated their ongoing love for football by searching for the World Cup, goal.com, the Premier League and Asamoah Gyan, our star striker. Apple’s Ipad as well as popular telenovela soap storm over paradise also made the list.
On the entertainment front, our love for Ghanaian music has reached new heights. Now Ghanaian musicians have established themselves as bona fide superstars with more and more of them putting out great music. Sarkodie was the most searched for Ghanaian musician followed by Ruff-n-Smooth and Samini. In the film industry, Jackie Appiah was by far the most searched for actress followed by Nadia Buari and Yvonne Nelson.
Facebook, Yahoo and Google topped the list of most frequent searches for 2010, showing the desire of Ghanaians to be part of a global online community. Ghanaians have joined a worldwide trend of using the Internet as a tool to communicate with and stay connected to friends and loved ones, and as a social development tool, allowing them to stay connected to the rest of the world.
