The Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) intends to recommend drastic changes to its regulations to cover accidental spillage of oil from fixed and floating platforms. The move has become necessary following the April oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico involving oil giant British Petroleum (BP). The Chief Executive of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Kofi Mbeah who chairs the IMO’s Legal Committee, told Joy News it is important that new instruments are developed to deal with issues arising from trans-boundary pollution on the high seas. “We have international legal regimes for marine pollution that deal with pollution arising from the carriage of crude oil by tankers. We also have a regime that deals with the bunkers, ... but we don’t have a regime that covers fixed and floating platforms and that is what we are looking at,” he said. Source: Joy Business/Ghana
