When one talks about the water supply problems in Accra, the community known as Six-to-Six hardly comes to mind.
But the community, near Lapaz, happens to be one of the worst-affected. What is most peculiar about the Water Problem in Six-to-Six is the excessively salty nature of their alternative water sources.
Joy News’ Kwaku Botwe toured the community to assess the water situation and reports that somewhere in the field in this community, school children are happily playing. But they have been bearing the harshest brunt of the water problem at Six-to-Six.
The water problem at Six-to-Six has persisted for over ten years. The taps flow once in a long while and if it does, nobody knows when next it will flow again. As a resident, Emmanuel narrates, community members use all sorts of unconventional means to get water.
Emmanuel has been in the community for only six months. He wonders how the people have been coping with the situation for over ten years.
Those who can afford it have jumbo-sized water storage tanks for the rare moments that the taps flow. Most of the people depend on commercially-dug wells for washing, bathing and other household chores. After travelling long distances, the quality of the water they get leaves much to be desired.
Food preparation is always difficult as people have to decide whether to use the salty, unclean well-water or spend extra money on sachet water.
The problem is not limited to homes. The Proprietors of St. Raphael International Day Care and Unilove International Primary Schools in the community have not had it easy running the facilities.
The pleas from the SIX-TO-SIX community members have not yielded any results yet, but they remain resolute in their call for help, hoping that someday the Ghana Water Company would lend them some attention and give them life; that is, if water is indeed life.
