Three teenagers drowned on the White Volta river last Sunday after they were returning from a National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency campaign launch at Daboya in the Northern Region.
The incident occurred at about 7:45 p.m when a canoe in which they were making a 10-minute return journey, capsized.
The three, all females, were JHS students with two of them in their final year. Mavis Kofi19,Samia Yusuf 19 and Fawdatu Abass18
Narrating the incident to myjoyonline.com, a witness, Ayuba, said the three came to the town Sunday morning to join the others at Daboya Primary School where the campaign launch of Parliamentary candidate for Daboya/Mankarigu Constituency candidate, Mahama Shaibu aka Obey was held.
After the launch, the three joined three other women to make the return journey on the White Volta.
Midway through the journey, some of the women complained to the young man paddling the canoe to concentrate on his work.
He was reportedly making calls and play moving to the beat of songs playing on a mobile phone. The canoe suddenly capsized.
Three women and the paddling young man were rescued by another canoe carrying a former assemblyman who was also travelling on the doomed boat.
Minutes later, the bodies of the three students surfaced.
