The Government says angry passengers of the defunct Ghana Airlines must be patient as attempts are being made to refund their monies.
Deputy Roads and Highways Minister Dzifa Ativor said the government was not to blame for the unfortunate state of affairs but pledged immediate resolution of the problem.
The passengers numbering about 800 were stranded late last year after they were unable to fly to Accra from London.
They have since then made several futile attempts to retrieve their monies from the Airline.
The passengers say they will organize a demonstration in the UK to demand the immediate payment of the monies and compensation.
“I will be part of them to do the demonstration because I need my money so I will do anything to get it. If the plane didn’t go, all we need is our money back. But nobody seemed to be concerned about it,” one of the passengers complained to Joy News.
She explained that she had to pay an alternative airline - British Airways to Ghana to attend a funeral of her late mother.
“I am a pensioner and I don’t have money and they sit on my money and not tell us anything,” she lamented.
“I am not happy and I need my refund. I will do anything if it will take my last breath,” another stated.
The chairman of the Board of the Airline, Albert Botchway, has refused to comment on the matter, but the Deputy Sector Minister Dzifa Ativor insists the government is busily working to resolve the passengers’ grievances.
She said that the government has already refunded monies that were paid to the airline itself but was now left with those paid to agents, explaining that lots of cross-checking would have to be done first before payment was made.
She conceded it had taken a lot of time to resolve the matter but stressed all passengers would have their grievances resolved.
According to her, tickets were sold but the monies have not been accounted for, making it difficult for payments to be made.
As a result, “money that is needed to be used to provide water and electricity will have to be diverted to pay these passengers who have been denied their comfort of travel on GIA,” she said.
She described the incident as unfortunate but said the government was not relenting in effort to address the situation.
“Government is committed to refunding their monies to them even though it is not our fault, we are committed to refunding their monies to them,” she assured.
