A nutritionist at the University of Ghana is warning the country could be heading for crisis unless steps are taken to address bad dietary habits of the younger generation.
Acting Head of Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences at Legon, Dr Matilda Asante, says increasing prevalence of chronic diseases among the youth required serious attention.
She spoke at the induction and oath-swearing ceremony for Allied Health interns at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.
According to Mrs. Asante, there is evidence to suggest rising unhealthy lifestyle among the younger population, especially school children.
She cites obesity among children, arising from consumption of carbonate drinks, processed meat as well as fatty and high-fat baked foods.
“Many of young children spend more time in school; return home with four different assignments and play video games,” she laments.
She adds, “We are breeding a generation of overweight children especially in the urban centers.”
The theme for the event was: “Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases through Intensive Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Diet.”
Registrar of Allied Health Professions Council, Dr. Clement Opoku-Okrah, cautioned institutions and allied health professionals against practicing without license.
