The momentary disappearance of the magazine of an AK 47 assault rifle carried by a policeman on duty at the Tamale main branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), on Tuesday created panic, as troubled customers were subjected to unpleasant body searches in a bid to retrieve the ammunition.Explaining the circumstances leading to the loss of the magazine and the subsequent commotion, a member of the police detail on guard said the incident happened during a rush by customers to gain entry into the banking hall when it was opened at 8.30 a.m."As a result of the stampede, during, which the crowd forced its way into the banking hall, my colleague hung his rifle on his chest to enable him to ensure order as the people kept on pushing at the gate," he explained."At that point, my colleague had the shock of his life when he noticed that the magazine of his rifle had been detached from its holder," he added. After" a while, the magazine was located by one of the policemen near a flower pot in the banking hall. But that was after the customers had gone through the rigorous body searches. The security men were of the opinion that the magazine had either been hidden under the pot by someone, following the search, or it had fallen down as a result of the pressure at the gate.Source: Daily Graphic
