Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan says he has spoken to teammate Danny Welbeck and is hopeful the young forward will commit to Ghana, but not immediately.
Born in London to Ghanaian parents, Welbeck has represented England from Under-17 through Under-21 levels but has been approached by Ghana to make the switch to the African country.
The youngster, currently on loan at Sunderland from Manchester United, has yet to make a decision, but Gyan says he hopes to help tip the balance in Ghana's favour.
"I have spoken to him, and I think he might play for Ghana, but I am not really sure of that for now," Gyan told KickOffNigeria.com.
"He's young and he has not made up his mind yet. He says we should give him enough time to think about it. But we all hope he comes as he is such a fantastic young player."
Gyan also pointed out how John Mensah, leader of Sunderland's Ghanaian contingent, has helped him settle.
"Before I came to Sunderland, I spoke to Mensah and he told me a lot of good things. We are like a family now and playing at Sunderland is like playing in the Ghanaian national team."
