A 10-year-old primary schoolgirl met her untimely death Monday, when she was gruesomely murdered by her mother under bizarre circumstances. Memuna Salam, the mother, was said to have grabbed the victim, Isha Dramani, forcibly dipped her head into a container full of water and held her until the girl became lifeless. Memuna, a resident of Sefwi-Tantrim, near Asantekrom in the Sefwi-Wiawso District in the Western Region, was reported to have committed the heinous crime about 7 a.m. when her daughter was preparing to go to school. According to police records, Memuna was arrested in 2009 for committing a similar crime by drowning her two other children in an open well that serves the Sefwi-Tantrim community. However, during prosecution in 2009, the Sefwi-Wiawso Magistrate’s Court ordered that she should be sent to the psychiatric hospital, where it was confirmed that she was suffering from mental instability. She was, therefore, admitted and given treatment. According to the police, Memuna was catered for at the medical facility until she was discharged recently to reunite with her family, while the Attorney General’s Department was to determine her fate in the previous case, when she committed the present offence. This was somehow attributed to the fact that the suspect failed to follow her scheduled medical reviews at the hospital. She is currently in police custody pending further investigations, while the body of little Isha has been deposited at the Sefwi Wiawso Government Hospital. In another development, a tragedy hit Sikamiasem, near Prestea Huni-Valley, when a nine-year-old girl, Nana Akua, drowned when she slipped and fell from a footbridge across a river while in the company of her father. Her father, Kofi Daboh, told the police that he and his daughter were crossing River Fure by the footbridge when she slipped and fell into the river. The body of Nana Akua has since been released for burial. Source: Daily Graphic/Ghana
