President John Mills has renewed his vow to find the killers of the late overlord of Dagbon Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II who was murdered together with a number of his elders in a violent ethnic clash in 2002. The search for the killers has proven elusive so far for the government, and particularly the NDC which promised as part of its electioneering campaign to bring the killers to book. A recent acquittal and discharge by a High Court of 15 Abudu suspects charged with the murder of the king sent NDC supporters in Tamale angry, torching the party’s constituency offices to ashes in the process. Accusing the judge of travesty of justice, the youth also 'marched' down to Accra and in a peaceful demonstration headed to the judiciary, where they sent a strongly worded petition to the Chief Justice. They promised to return, in unstated forms, if justice was not served at the appeals. They also presented similar petitions to the Attorney General and Parliament. According to President John Mills, he was shocked by the court’s verdict - a verdict which nearly scuttled his planned tour of Tamale after threats from party youth in the area. Having successfully began his four day tour of the Northern Region, the president did not fail to re-echo his government’s unfailing desire to bring the perpetrators of Ya-Na's murder to book. Addressing chiefs and people of Northern Region at Gukpe Na's palace, the president said his government will stop at nothing, even if it means soliciting outside help to ensure justice is served. “Let me assure you that Atta Mills government will never turn its back on you because we have made a sacred promise to the Almighty to make sure that we join you in your times of joy and in your times of sorrow. We have promised to do whatever it takes to make sure justice is done even if it means seeking outside help.
