Two electricians who attacked some students of Pantang Nursing Training College and eventually robbed them of their mobile phones and other items after inflicting knife injuries on them, have been sentenced to a total of 30 years’ imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court. The convicts, Kwadwo Emmanuel and James Kwame, were found guilty by Georgina-Mensah Datsa on three charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery after a full trial in which the convicts had vehemently denied taking part in any robbery activities. The judge observed that the prosecution was able to prove a case against them beyond all reasonable doubt by the evidence of its witnesses, while the accused failed to put up a solid defence. The judge sentenced each of them to 15 years on each count but the sentences were to run concurrently. The prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Mattew Amponsah, disclosed that one Seidu Yakubu, Hosu Ivy Dzifa, Lomotey Nii and Agboada Eunice Amua Mansah, all students of Pantang Nursing Training College, are the complainants. He narrated that on December 5, 2009, at about 3:30am, the students were returning to their hostel, having participated in a programme which ended late in the night. On their way, the convicts, armed with two knives, emerged from nowhere and ordered them to surrender everything they had, threatening to harm them if they refused. The prosecutor said when the complainants failed to comply with their orders, the two men attacked the students and in the process injured Hosu Ivy Dzifa with the knife. The convicts robbed the complainants of three mobile phones and one MP3 player and bolted. The victims narrated their ordeal to one of their mates, who apparently knew James and eventually traced the robbers’ hideout. Kwadwo and James were arrested in their hideout and the three mobile phones and one MP3 player were retrieved from them and handed over to the police. According to the prosecutor, Kwadwo Emmanuel, in his caution statement, categorically confessed to the crime and further disclosed the involvement of his accomplice. He however claimed that it was James who had in his possession the knife. He allegedly said he also needed the phone for his personal use. His accomplice, James Kwame, on the other hand, denied any involvement in the crime. Source: Daily Guide
