The Energy Centre at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is conducting studies on how to inject more significant amount of solar power into the national energy mix.
The university is already collaborating with Wa Polytechnic to install solar measuring instruments to assess the impact of sun in the Upper West region, known to be the sunniest part of Ghana.
Chairman of the Energy Commission, Professor Abeiku Brew-Hammond, says data collected from the exercise will be made available to the Volta River Authority to explore the possibility of building solar plants for power production in the region.
He announced this during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the KNUST and the International Institute for Water and Environment Engineering.
Professor Brew–Hammond indicated already the KNUST Energy Centre has so far added to the national grid 4 kilowatts of solar energy powered from the university.
The MOU will facilitate exchange in training of lecturers from the KNUST and other universities in Africa, particularly in PhD programmes.
Pro-Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Peter Donkor, underscored the need for African universities to develop what he calls consortium of African intellectuals to tackle challenges facing the continent.
