The rector of the St. Peters Cathedral Basilica in Kumasi, is calling on all Ghanaians, especially supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress to reject the presidential bid of former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.
Reverend Rafael Owusu Peprah is also appealing to the Constitutional Review Commission to consider introducing a provision to prevent spouses of coup makers from running for president.
According to Joy News correspondent Elton John Brobbey, the priest fears Ghana is on the verge of being introduced to the dark days of the AFRC/PNDC era of former President Rawlings if Mrs Rawlings is allowed to contest for the presidency.
He said every effort must be made to discourage coup makers and their spouses from contesting the presidency.
Rev. Owusu Peprah believes “if you allow their spouses to contest for democratic elections, it means that they are going to perpetuate their dynasty… and once you have a dynasty you want to feed on it and [you] want people who will [follow] your will because you always have the advantage.”
He said Mrs Rawlings’ candidature will bring back bad memories of things that happened to people during the revolutionary days, a situation he believes Ghanaians must reject.
Touching on the issue of corruption in the country, Rev. Owusu Peprah said politicians are “really failing the country” and that “our democracy is tolerating corruption,” warning if the direction is not checked it will destroy the gains made so far.
