Fans of Bolgs All Stars held referee Mohammad Awal and his assistants hostage nearly in the middle of the FA Cup quarter finals Wednesday for an hour.
The fans accused the referee of giving them a raw deal when he ignored what seemed to them an obvious last minute penalty following a bad tackle on Bolga All Stars attacker in the visitors’ penalty box.
At the time of the incident, the uncrowned league champions were leading 1-0. Police personnel had a hectic time controlling the crowd, but finally succeeded in creating a safe passage for the centre referee and his assistants.
The poor officiating exhibited by the referee attracted who were members of the FA Organising Committee, Mr. Albert Commey, who expressed shock at the performance and called for disciplinary action against the referee.
Some spectators in an interview with the Graphic Sports registered their displeasure about the referee’s conduct.
The PRO of Bolga All Stars, Mr. Victor Ayamga, expressed his frustration about the situation and said it was unfortunate that referees would always conspire to deny smaller teams the chance to develop.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo, who was among the spectators said he was impressed with the performance of the home team, but was quick to condemn the officiating of the game.
The Chairman of the MTN FA Cup Competition, Lepowura Alhaji M.N.D Jawula, also commended both teams for their outstanding performance and wished the winning teams the best of luck in their games.
