The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Yaw Owusu Obimpeh has has blamed his failure to attend this year's June 4 uprising event in Kumasi on death threats he revealed three days to the event. Dr Obimpeh said he received threatening text messages from some unknown people forcing to stay away from the event. Some leading members of the ruling party have been lambasted for staying out of the event which government spokespersons say was turned into a campaign rally for former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. But speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM on Tuesday, Dr Obimpeh said his absence was for security reasons. He stated that prior to the celebration the Regional executives of the party issued a statement directing all executive to attend the celebration since it was being held in the region. According to him, since he endorsed President Mills’ candidature for the flag bearer of the NDC, he had consistently come under attack from some members of the party, insisting he was however not perturbed by the harassment. He added that though ex-President Rawlings leveled lots of allegations against the government, Ghanaians are the best judges. He stated that he believes President Mills has done tremendously well since the party assumed office in 2009 and is optimistic the NDC will cruise to victory in the 2012 elections.
