Ex-first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has reportedly assured she will not break away from the National Democratic Congress should she lose next month’s primaries.
This is according to the chairman of the Vetting Committee of the National Democratic Congress, Alhaji Issifu Ali, after nearly 45 minutes of vetting of the ex-first lady.
Mrs Rawlings was the first of two flagbearer candidates to face the vetting committee Tuesday and told journalists the session was alright except it landed a bit longer than she had expected. President John Mills is expected to take his turn Wednesday. The vetting committee will submit a report of the vetting process to the National Executive Council of the party.
Speaking to Joy News’ Araba Koomson after the vetting, the chairman of the committee said they have been worried about the growing tension and mudslinging between supporters of the two candidates and that the issue was high on the agenda of the vetting committee.
He said they are all the more apprehensive of media reports of a likely breakaway by the Rawlingses should Nana Konadu be defeated in the party’s primaries in July.
Ex-president Jerry Rawlings had hinted of a possible breakaway in his June 4 pronouncements when he said the inevitable will happen if his wife lost the primaries.
Dr. Spio Garbrah, a known critic of President John Mills and his administration had early on hinted of a possibility of a new party emerging from the NDC.
But according to the vetting committee chairman, Issifu Ali, the ex-first lady vowed to keep faith with the NDC even if she loses the primaries.
