Two traders in Kumasi are under investigations for allegedly threatening to burn down the offices of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
Police say the threats were the reason for a raid on the studios of Kapital Radio yesterday, during which the traders were arrested.
The suspects were speaking on a programme discussing the demolition of their shops as part of what the city authorities describe as a beautification exercise.
The Ashanti Regional Police PRO, Inspector Mohammed Tanko said the police acted upon receipt of a complaint from the KMA Chief Executive Samuel Sarpong that some discussants had threatened to burn down the KMA office if the demolition exercise was not stopped.
“We mobilized some of our men to go to Kapital Radio to effect their arrest,” he stated.
Inspector Tanko said the police had asked for the audio recording of the discussion to facilitate their investigations.
The traders have not been charged yet but “we... told them we are investigating them for threatening arson,” he explained.
Meanwhile the head of security at the KMA faces possible dismissal over allegations of bribery leveled against him by some of the traders whose shops were destroyed.
Eric Asiedu is alleged to have taken one thousand Ghana cedis from some of the traders under the pretext of sparing their shops from being demolished.
Luv FM’s Elton John Brobbey reported that Mr Asiedu was exposed after he failed to live up to his promise.
The security officer is reported to have returned the money when the matter became public but that appears to be too late to save him as the PRO of the KMA, Clement Kigeri, has insisted the assembly will apply the appropriate sanctions.
The security co-ordinator of the Metropolis, Mr Kegeri said, “is one of the senior personnel within the Metropolis and when there are allegations against him,…these allegations must be taken seriously.”
