Personnel of the Sekyere Rural Bank at Jamasi in the Ashanti Region had a shock of their lives when they opened up for business on Monday as they found a machete-wielding young man inside one of the locked offices.
He was threatening to butcher anybody who came close.
It took a lot of effort by the Agona Police who had to force him out by inundating the place with pepper spray.
The culprit, later identified as Kwame Gyasi Frimpong who hails from Boanim near Jamasi told police he owns the bank.
The 28-year-old dressed in a brown shirt and black jeans shorts did not take anything from the bank but would not leave the office.
Upon his arrest, the suspect claimed the banking hall was open when he came in.
Agona District Police Commander, ASP Francis Akwasi Asante said Mr Gyasi Frimpong would be arraigned before court soon.
“The way he answered our questions indicates that he is not sane but it is up to the doctors to confirm that. So we will send him to the court and they will take it up from there”, he added.
Officials of the Sekyere Rural Bank said security would be strengthened to forestall any future occurrence.
Head of operations at the Bank, Prosper Badu Dery said, “this is actually the first time we have experienced anything like this, but there is the need to beef up security in the bank”.
The police are investigating how he got access to the banking hall.
