The Office of Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, former President of Ghana, says it has taken a serious note of a series of false, libellous and slanderous publications in the media calculated to tarnish the image and create public disaffection against the former President and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
“We take particular issue with the serialisation of a scurrilous article by former British diplomat Craig Murray that accuses the former President and Mrs. Rawlings of fraud, bribery and corrupt tendencies,” a statement issued by the office Sunday, noted.
“The allegations by Mr. Murray, a discredited diplomat who was compelled to quit the service because of the reckless manner he allowed his personal opinion to blight his judgement have never been substantiated and are still a subject of potential legal action.
“It is unethical, unprofessional, libellous and slanderous for sections of the media to re-publish such an article without recourse to our office or without any supporting evidence. We have also noted that these publications have come about as a result of the decision by Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings to contest the NDC presidential primaries.
“Members of the media are cautioned not to fall victim to the political schemes of unscrupulous persons who are hell-bent on destroying the reputation of Flt Lt Rawlings and Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings in a bid to scupper Nana Konadu’s chances at the forthcoming presidential primaries.
“The series of articles by Mr. Murray, which are being reproduced by some media and other falsehoods that are being thrown to unsuspecting media, are libellous and lawyers for President Rawlings and Mrs. Rawlings are taking necessary action.
“Furthermore, any libellous and defamatory publications by members of the media will be taken up accordingly.
“Thank you.”
