DHL Ghana Limited, an international courier service, has pledged unflinching support to the promotion and development of Rugby in the country.
The company has partnered the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA) in its quest to realise the objective of making the sport attractive and popular.
In line with that, the company sponsored a day’s clinic for young players from selected schools on Saturday at the Saint Thomas Aquinas Senior High School Park.
Isaac Sackey, Area Human Resources and Administrative Manager of DHL Central West Africa said the objective of the clinic was to create awareness about the sport and expose it to the youth.
He said his outfit was motivated by the potentials of Ghanaians in a sport classified amongst the lesser endowed sporting disciplines in the country.
Sackey added that the initiative was a way of giving back to the society as well as engaging the youth to develop their future.
He said DHL was very much associated with Rugby with its sponsorship of the Cape Town-based Stormers in South Africa, and expressed the hope that the company would replicate the funding in Ghana with the establishment of an interim league.
Ms Gifty Annan-Myers, Chairman of the GRA lauded the initiative of DHL which provided a platform development and exposure for the youngsters.
With DHL tradition in Rugby in Southern Africa, she expressed the conviction that the company’s association with the sport marked a promising beginning for its development in Ghana.
The participating schools were SDA High School, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial School, Ghana International School, Saps School, University Practice School, Kotobabi “13” School and Deyoungster’s International School.
The children were taken through the rudiments and rules of the sport.
They also had an opportunity to observe a professional game involving Dansoman Hurricanes and Tema Anchors, which the latter won by 19-0.
The clinic was climaxed with a reception in the evening where prizes were presented to the participating teams.
Nathaniel Addy of Dansoman Hurricanes was adjudged the most valuable player whilst his club and runners-up Tema Anchors were presented with trophies.
DHL Ghana also presented a replica jersey of the Cape Town Stormes endorsed by the players to Ms Annan-Myers, on behalf of the GRA.Source: GNA
