Black Stars player of the moment, Asamoah ‘Baby Jet’, Gyan, is on the threshold of joining the elite class of sportsmen to have won the nation’s two most prized individual awards when the “most prestigious SWAG AWARDS takes centre stage at the spacious Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra on Saturday.
The happy-go-lucky Gyan, famous in both soccer and showbiz circles, who might even perform on the night with his friend, Castro, was the best thing that happened to Ghana soccer in 2010, for which reason he stands a good chance to tread the path of Dominic Adiyiah who also ran away with the enviable double in the 2009 edition of the SWAG Awards.
From the Africa Nations Cup in Angola to the South Africa 2010 World Cup, Gyan endeared himself not only to Ghanaians, but the world at large, with some sterling performances which made him an instant hit in world football.
However, all that can only remain a dream for the Sunderland striker and his admirers with regard to the top awards as he faces stiff challenge from IBF bantamweight title holder, Joseph Agbeko, and Black Stars’ safe hands, Richard Kingson, for the Sports Personality of the Year flagship, while contending with Kingson and Andre Dede Ayew, who was a revelation last year, in the Footballer of the Year category.
That will be the highlight of the 36th MTN/SWAG Awards Night which will be graced by Special Guest, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhen of Essikado in Sekondi, and the movers and shakers of Ghana Sports.
Another category which will be of keen interest is the Premiership Player of the Year award which was introduced in the 2009 Awards.
The uniqueness of this year’s event is that all the 30 award winners in the various disciplines will have a lot more than trophies and ATL products to carry home by way of MultiTV and rlg products, not to talk of the plenty stuff provided by the various sponsors for patrons to dine and wine in an atmosphere of Ramblers Band renditions.
As usual, headline sponsors, MTN, might also have some surprises up their sleeves to complete the joy of patrons as they paint the Banquet House yellow and underline their determination to take the SWAG Awards to the next level.
