Presidential candidate of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Tawiah III, at the latter's residence at Labone in Accra, a visit which coincided with this year’s Homowo celebration.
His visit also formed part of his "listening tour" of the Greater Accra Region.
Accompanied by the power brokers in the party, Nana Addo underscored that "there are some people who still believe that violence is the only way to govern a country, but thanks to the rule of law and democracy, we will conquer that."
In the face of the dispute regarding the Ga Mantse’s seat, Nana Addo comforted him saying, "Don’t be afraid, once there is the rule of law, your chieftaincy will be devoid of the rancour."
The NPP, led by its flagbearer, presented five crates of beer, five crates of Fanta, bottles of schnapp and an unspecified amount of money to the Ga Mantse as its support to the Ga Land for the celebration of the festival.
According to Naa Dedei Omaadru III, Queen mother of the Ga Land, what happened in the recent past where another person was installed as the King - when Nii Tackie Tawiah had not been destooled - was unfortunate and said "but all right-thinking Ghanaians know that there is only one Ga Mantse, who is Nii Tackie Tawiah III."
For Nii Okaija III, Gbese Mantse and Adonten of the Ga Land, "what happened at the Ga Mantse's palace some months back was a pure coup d'etat unprecedented in the history of chieftaincy in the country, but thanks to rule of law, Ghanaians will know who the true Ga Mantse is."
The NPP standard bearer and his entourage will continue their tour of the region today and also visit some of the chiefs in the region.
