Government has commissioned investigations into the circumstances under which the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament failed to consider an audit report detailing financial malfeasance at the Information Ministry under the NPP government.
The committee wrapped up work on the Auditor General’s report on the accounts of the Ministry between 2007 and 2008, but the government has raised red flags that the alleged mismanagement of funds at the ministry under the Kufuor administration was not considered.
Deputy Minister of Information Okudzeto Ablakwa suggested in an interview with Joy News that something suspicious might have gone on at the committee’s sitting, stating that government has commenced “investigation” into it.
Although he said it would be too early to prejudge what the committee did, he noted: “We just want to find out what is really amiss because we know that the report was also copied to the Chief of Staff's office…we also want to find out from his office how come the public Accounts Committee said they have not seized with it and we will decide on the way forward.”
The Vice Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu has told Joy News the Committee had no cause to delve into allegations which were not contained in the report submitted by the Auditor General.
“I have read through all the three reports, that particular issue is not contained in any of these reports.... We don’t work with information from government, we work with information from parliament, and parliament receives information from a state agency.”
