Government has been tasked to effectively collaborate with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to initiate moves to regulate the pricing of fish.
This follows complaints by consumers of high prices of tilapia on the market.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Fishermen’s Brigade, Prince Dugah made the call in an interview with Adom Business News during the launch of a three-day National Tilapia Fair at the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra Thursday.
The Fair, which is the maiden edition, is being organized by the National Fishermen Brigade with the aim of educating Ghanaians on the need to engage in fish farming to help reduce unemployment in the country.
Mr. Dugah said it is high time Ghanaians do away with the notion that fishing is for the aged since it contributes immensely to national revenue.
He expressed worry at the rate at which some fishermen fish haphazardly without making any alternative arrangements to protect the country’s aqua-culture for future generations.
Mr. Dugah cited lack of logistics and light fishing as some of the major impediments to the industry and called for concerted efforts to arrest the menace. He said if government does not take pragmatic steps to address the challenges confronting the fishing industry, Ghana would soon experience scarcity.
The Fair has been instituted to become an annual event in the country.
