Spokesperson for Vice President John Mahama has refuted claims that he (John Mahama) is the brain behind the selection of Great Consolidated Diamonds Company Limited (GCDL), as the eventual winners of the bid to run the defunct Ghana Consolidated Diamond Company (GCD).
To buttress his point and exonerate the Vice President from any complicity on Adom Fm’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday, John Jinapor produced a letter purported to have come from the Vice President's Office which read in part "I’m reliably informed that GCDL won the bid because of significant financial investment proposes."
Over One Hundred million Dollars (100,000,000) is expected to be injected into the mine to revamp it under a five year multi-phase program. The company is also expected to create 50,000 jobs and reclaim the 40,000 hectares of land, which could be used for farming.
John Jinapor noted that the selfless service displayed by the Vice President which saw the coming into life of the mine rather needs recommendation and not condemnation.
Ghana Consolidated Diamond Company was established by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah but collapsed some years ago.
John Jinapor noted that the revamping will create job opportunities in the catchment area of Kwaebibirem in the Eastern region. He was happy the contract went to a local investor, noting that proceeds from the company will remain in the country.
Meanwhile, the former Minister for Lands, Mines and Energy, Prof Dominic Fobih has commended the NDC government for ensuring the revamping of GCD.
He noted that negotiations started during the NPP administration, but could not finish.
The Akwatiahene Osabarima Kofi Boateng III has expressed his profound gratitude to the NDC government for fulfilling its campaign promise.
He promised that he and his subjects will ensure that money invested in the company would not be in vain.
Osabarima Kofi Boateng III narrated some sad events that occurred when the company collapsed, saying some had to starve to death, high rate of school drop out due to their parents’ inability to pay school fees.
