The Board Chairman of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), Naval Capt. (Rtd) Yaw Asaase Gyimah has expressed worry over the rampant politicization of the work of security agencies especially NACOB. Naval Capt. Rtd Asaase Gyimah said fighting narcotics in the country needs various stakeholders coming together with political parties so politicizing it makes the fighting difficult. Speaking on Asempa Fm’s current affairs programme Ekosii-Sen on Wednesday, the NACOB Chairman said that the main focus of NACOB now, is to fight ‘wee’ farming which is gradually becoming a commercial enterprise in the country. The statesman newspaper on Wednesday reported that the General Secretary of the opposition NPP cautioning members of the NPP about an alleged drug plot against NPP members. According to the report, Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie said he had received information that some people at the Kotoka International Airport had planned to plant drugs in the luggage of NPP members. In a reaction to the publication, Yaw Asaase Gyimah warned: "We don’t want any dirty politics at NACOB." He challenged the NPP to provide evidence of their statement adding the NACOB has no plans to destroy any political party. He stated that his outfit is even drafting proposals to include political parties in their activities and wonders the reason why they could be accused of plotting against the opposition NPP. He emphasized that if someone is planning against the NPP then it is not NACOB. He said if the officials of NACOB will search luggage of travelers then it is not because they belong to a political party. Touching on the recent arrest of some NACOB personnel at the Kotoka International Airport, Naval Capt Asaase Gyimah hinted that investigations are ongoing and at the right time, NACOB will come out with a report. He lamented about how NACOB is under resourced which he said is affecting their efforts in fighting the narcotics trade in the country. He said personnel who were busted at the Airport got involved in the business due to issues of remuneration. He said if they were to be paid well no drug peddler can induce them with money. He admonished judges who sit on drug cases to be firm and not allow themselves to be induced with money by drug dealers.
