A member of the communication team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC),Felix Kwakye Ofosu has called the bluff of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for describing President J.E.A Mills’ inability to attend a fund-raising programme by African leaders in aid of Somalia as a diplomatic blunder. According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the NPP are just exhibiting double standards in their quest to unseat the NDC in the 2012 general elections. The NPP has lashed out President Mills for not being present at an occasion being championed by his predecessor, former President Jerry John Rawlings who is the African Union High Representative for Somalia. The fund-raising event organise by the African Union was geared towards mobilizing resources for Somalia in response to Mr. Rawlings’ call to the world to the prevalence of poverty and hunger in the country. President Mills was represented by Ghana’s ambassador to Ethiopia at the occasion and pledged an amount of $500,000 to help the cause of Somalia. But NPP believes President Mills’ absence is an attempt to sabotage Mr. Rawlings’ effort to salvage the poverty endemic Somalia and to demonstrate to the outside world that they (Mills and Rawlings) are not in good terms. However, on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Felix Kwakye Ofosu took a swipe at the NPP for acting ‘irresponsibly’ and reading politics into such a delicate issue as the Somalian crisis. “What kind of opposition is that; it is (NPP) the most abysmal in the history of the Forth Republic. There is no standard, no consistency and principle; It is a joke” he added. Felix Kwakye Ofosu noted that, the NPP do not have the moral authority to speak about Pan Africanism since they (NPP) have no history in helping Pan African efforts. The NDC youth activist stated emphatically that the Mills-led administration play a key role in getting former President Rawlings appointed as special envoy to Somalia hence the argument by the largest opposition party has been flawed. Felix Ofosu Kwakye could not fathom why much the NPP wanted government to donate to Somalia when they described $3 million to Haiti when it suffered as profligate spending. He wondered why the Mills-led administration’s which is very commitment to assisting other African countries in crisis would turn a blind eye on Somalia especially when it is being spearheaded by an illustrious son of the land, former-president Rawlings. Contrary to NPP claims that the image of the country has dwindled internationally since the NDC came to power, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stressed that “ we are held high in international circle after Kwame Nkrumah put the country on the pedestal". Felix Kwakye Ofosu urged the NPP to get serious and offer constructive criticisms to government rather than seeking to score political point in their desperate efforts to win power in 2012.
