The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) is questioning the basis for the new upward tariff adjustment in water and electricity.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURC) on Monday announced an average seven percent increase in the utilities beginning September 1, 2011, in line with the periodic adjustment of tariffs.
But Kofi Kapito, Chief Executive Officer of the CPA, wants the Public PURC to come clear on reasons for the tariff increment, especially when the quantitative quality of service index is yet to be developed.
"It was agreed upon that these benchmarks would be put in place to be able to see the efficiency of the utility companies. But it doesn’t look like the consumer is capable of doing anything”, he said.
The quantitative quality index is to be incorporated directly into the automatic adjustment system.
According to Mr. Kapito “we should have had this service indicator in place for us to measure and see if these people deserve any more increase. But it’s now going to be developed, so on what basis are they telling us that the services have improved?”
The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and other small business operators have indicated the rise in cost of production will be transferred to the consumer.
This is a worry to the Consumer Protection Agency and Kofi Kapito wants the public to begin engaging parliament for an intervention.
“This is the time that all Ghanaians or a group of people to write a petition to their MPs to come to their aid, that is why you vote them there”, he stated.
