The outgoing Head of the National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCC), Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, says he will come out with what he thinks are the real reasons why his honorary appointment at the NCC was terminated. Speaking to the Daily Graphic, he said “I am hoping to come out with the real reasons why the Minister of Health wrote that Letter”. He was reacting to the termination of his appointment as Honorary Director of the NCC at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital last week.He said he knew there would be a time that he would hand over that office so he started preparing his handing over notes as the director for the centre to his successor.He, however, maintained that the manner in which his appointment was terminated was wrong because handing over to his successor at the centre was a process.On his future plans, he said he would not take any decision that would not be in the collective interest of the nation and his patients.There are those who have given a political twist to the termination of his appointment, but Prof. Frimpong-Boateng discounted that and said he did not read any political meaning to what had happened to him. He recalled that the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on his listening tour to the Ablekuma South Constituency about two weeks ago visited the hospital where he had interaction with some of the workers.He said even though the flag bearer noted their numerous concerns and said the NPP in opposition did not have immediate solutions to resolve them; he nevertheless gave the assurance that the NPP in power would do its best to solve some of the challenges mentioned. According to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, he did not think that could lead anyone to conclude that Nana Akufo Addo’s visit and interaction with the nurses and other workers were part of the reasons for his appointment to be terminated.The Minister of Health, Mr Yieleh Chireh, signed a letter dated Thursday, August 24, 2011 in which he informed Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng of the termination of his appointment “with immediate effect.” The dismissal had been met with protests from the medical association with doctors at the NCC laying their tools down in solidarity with Prof. Frimpong-Boateng. The doctors sent a petition to the President requesting that the status quo be restored.President John Mills after a meeting with medical staff resolved that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng hands over administrative duties within one month.A statement signed by a Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah, said the President would at times respect the rule of law in carrying out his duties as President.
