Ghana’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Victor Smith, is promising the people of Abuakwa North constituency what he calls “genuine and honest” development. Mr Smith, who picked nomination forms to contest the parliamentary slot of the ruling National Democratic Congress has vowed to wrest the Abuakwa North parliamentary seat from the New Patriotic Party. Joy FM’s Eastern Regional correspondence, Benjamin Tetteh, reports that the Ambassador was followed by a huge crowd of persons purported to be members of the NPP, clad in the NPP party colours, expressing delight in his candidacy. “Initially when I saw the crowd I really thought it was an NPP rally,” Benjamin Tetteh remarked. When asked what he makes of the support and whether they are indeed known members of the NPP, Mr Smith pointed out: “I think the evidence is on the street for you to see.” He said the teeming support that was demonstrated stems from the fact that the “people of Abuakwa North constituency, the youth, the mothers and the fathers have said clearly that if I stood as the Member of Parliament for 2012 for this constituency, they will all vote for me. “Not because of [NPP] internal squabbles, but the fact that they have a conviction that serious development can come to this constituency from an individual like myself…when I say something will happen, it happens. I have promised them and I have assured them that I will bring development that they have never seen in their lives.” He accused the current and previous MPs of the area of doing very little for the constituency, and hoped that would change when he goes to parliament. “This constituency has seen too much underdevelopment for so many years,” he emphasised, adding that under him, the people “will see genuine and honest development”. Mr Victor Smith, whose mother hails from Kukurantumi, said his agenda was purely for development and not for post, explaining that if it had been because of a position, he would have stayed on his job as an Ambassador.
