The Western Regional wing of the Opposition New Patriotic Party, has accused the NDC Government of using divide and rule tactics to score cheap political points.
At a News Conference in Takoradi, they condemned the NDC’s call on residents of the Western Region to vote against NPP MPs and the party as a whole for disapproving of the $3 billion Chinese loan, of which $1.8 billion is earmarked for the region’s development.
Addressing the News Conference, the Regional Youth Organiser of the party, Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed, said the PNDC/NDC Government had always thrived on division by creating enmity amongst various groups.
He said the party has not offered anything concrete to the Western Region, adding that their achievements in the nearly 23 years rule is nothing to write home about.
He said the development experienced in the region under ex-President Kufuor was unprecedented even without mention of the oil discovery in commercial quantities.
He explained that the NPP in principle, is not against the acquisition of a loan facility to develop the region and the country as a whole, but will reject a facility whose terms and conditions will not serve the larger interest of the country.
The party’s Regional Communications Director, Emmanuel Acquah told Maxx News the party did not oppose the loan, but only raised relevant issues for the overall interest of the country.
“We have been monitoring with keen interest the reckless and mischievous attempts by the NDC youth in the Western region to instigate the people against the NPP and its Parliamentarians. We think that this is most unfortunate. But the NDC has a tradition of always creating enmity between people before they will thrive. They pitch the poor against the rich, successful businessmen against the public, recently pitching the Police and the Military against the NPP in the STX and aircraft deals. A few days ago, they tried to pitch Muslims against the NPP, and now they want to pitch Westerners against the NPP”.
“But unfortunately for them, the people of the Western region are more intelligent than what the NPP wants them to fall prey to. The development that was carried on under former President Kufuor is simply unprecedented in the Western Region,” he stated.
After presenting a long list of projects that he said have been executed by the NPP in the region, Mr. Acquah challenged the NDC to come out with a list of its performance in the region.
“What we are inviting the NDC to do is to tell us over the past years, what they have done for the Western Region in the last two years. They are just coming about with this highfalutin, dubious loan to claim credit that they love the region. This can definitely not be true. They do not have the region at heart. If they have the region at heart, what did they do about the Osagyefo power barge? How come some loan that was supposed to be used for the Western Corridor road has been diverted? We are entreating well-meaning Ghanaians to abhor and reject any political grouping that wants to take advantage of dividing people before they can succeed. This is definitely not good for our country” Mr. Acquah noted.
