The editor of Gye Nyame Concord newspaper, Alfred Ogbamey has underscored the need for persons who spoke to foreign diplomats on sensitive national issues to be interrogated to ascertain the basis for their action.
The international whistle blower website, wikileaks, in its recent cable leaked from the US Embassy in Accra revealed some sensitive issues on government deals and attempts by some government officials around the Presidency who have tried to use their influence to manipulate control of the country’s oil resources for their personal gain.
The leaks also revealed that some top politicians and media personnel are stabbing each other in the back.
Even though some of the public officials quoted in the leaks have denied ever speaking to any US diplomat, others have corroborated the revelations in the leaked cable.
However, Alfred Ogbamey on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, noted that the public officials especially those in government who have been quoted in the leaked cable owe it a duty to explain to Ghanaians the reason for their actions.
He explained that, any meeting summoned by the foreign diplomats is of intelligence value which these public officials are aware of.
"Most of the people quoted in the leaks [know perfectly well that the things they say about the country and other political opponents] would contribute to US Intelligence gathering processes". None of them can convince me that they did not know” he added.
The Gye Nyame Concord editor found it surprising why some people quoted by the leaked cables would continue to deny having any contact with the US Embassy after being exposed.
Alfred Ogbamey who revealed that he had been invited to certain meetings by the foreign diplomats stressed the need for public officials and colleague journalists to be cautious when dealing with these foreign diplomats.
Conceding that there are a lot of inaccuracies in the wikileaks cables, he advocated that the entire cable must not be rubbished.
On Kwesi Pratt’s denial of telling US Embassy officials that Nana Akufo-Addo used to smoke marijuana, Alfred Ogbamey could not fathom why the Insight editor could commit such a blunder.
“I think Kwesi Pratt is well experienced and should know that he is talking to an intelligence officer especially close to an elections period”.
