Aide to flag bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP, Samuel Abu Jinapor says President John Evans Atta Mills is liable for impeachment if he lied to Ghanaians about his state of health.
Deputy Information Minister, Baba Jamal is quoted in the June 5th 2007 leaked US diplomatic cable that President Mills, then presidential aspirant of the ruling National Democratic Congress suffers from throat cancer.
According to the leaked cable, Baba Jamal is purported to have stated that, President Mills had some kind of throat cancer and was on the mend, although not yet fully recovered.
However, Baba Jamal’s claims was corroborated by the Foreign Service Health Practitioner at the US Embassy in 2007 who revealed that President John Evans Atta-Mills, then candidate Mills, had throat cancer, and not sinusitis which he (Mills) and his aides would want Ghanaians to believe.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Abu Jinapor noted that there is enough grounds to impeach President for lying if the ruling party believes everything in the leaked diplomatic cable wikileaks is the truth.
According to him, President Mills lied to Ghanaians when he said he had contracted a serious sinus infection when he returned to the country from South Africa ahead of the 2008 general election.
Abu Jinapor explained that throat cancer is a disease caused by chain smoking, excessive use of alcohol and wonders how the President could contract such a disease if he (Mills) did not indulge in the intake of alcohol and smoking.
The aide to Nana Akufo-Addo asserted that, reports have it that President Mills was a known chain smoker as well as an excessive user of alcohol in his days as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana.
“The presidency has to come out clean and tell Ghanaians whether indeed President Mills has sinus or throat cancer. Who is telling Ghanaians the truth; is it the United State Embassy or President Mills” he bemoaned.
He said attempts by the NDC to portray President Mills as infallible and ‘holier than thou’ has been flawed by the latest revelation by wikileaks.
Abu Jinapor observed that President Mills who professes to be father for all is a “politically hypocritical [leader] who says one thing and does another thing”.
