Ghanaian sprinter Aziz Zakari has exclusively told JOY Sports he will retire from athletics after the All Africa Games in Maputo.
The 35-year-old, who has suffered a string of disappointing performance over the past 5 years, finally admits he cannot compete at the highest level.
Zakari told JOY Sports, “There are young ones coming. Fortunately we have two here and then we should expect a good performance from them. This is my fifth All Africa Games and this will be my last as well. I can’t give anymore so this will be my last.”
He is now targeting a good performance on the tracks in Maputo beginning this weekend so he can retire honorably.
He was encouraged to call time on his career by the legendary Adjin Tettey after failing to make it to the final of the 100 metres at the World Athletics Championship in Daegu, South Korea.
Aziz Zakari participated at the 2000 Summer Olympics but failed to make it to the final of the 100 metres after sustaining an injury. He also took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics where he qualified to the semi final but failed to finish in the final of the 100 metres.
