Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress Ade Coker is warning aspiring Members of Parliament not to peak before their time or they will be disqualified. He is enraged by what he said are attempts by government officials to oust sitting Members of Parliament. The NDC has opened nominations for orphan constituencies (constituencies with opposition MPs) across the country but has postponed nominations for constituencies with NDC MPs to a later date. However some government officials have been accused of usurping the powers of sitting MPs and campaigning for their seats ahead of time. Only last week confusion ensued at the Odododiodio Constituency of the NDC between the sitting MP, Nii Tackie Commey and the presidential aide Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye. The constituency Women’s Organiser of the party alleged she was slapped by a security detail of the presidential aide, an allegation he denied suggesting rather that he was attacked by the MP. Ade Coker in an interview with Joy News described the incident as unfortunate saying he was "extremely unhappy". He warned all who are interested in vying for positions to abide by the rules and regulations. “Those government appointees who are disturbing the sitting MPs have started causing some skirmishes in the constituencies and I am taking a serious view on it and sooner or later we will disqualify them.” For now “all sitting MPs' constituencies are no go areas. What we are interested in now are orphan constituencies, and even those constituencies until you have been nominated and your nomination has been accepted, campaign should seize.” He admonished all interested parties to observe the rules. He said during vetting all who violated the regulation will face the full penalty. A political scientist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has however described the jostling of some as attempts to "run away from poverty." Kwasi Amakye said people in positions would always perpetrate themselves in power because they are assured of some level of comfort. He said the jostle for MP’s positions becomes even more controversial largely because when you are elected as an MP you are safer than a minister who is not too sure the government will be retained in power.
