Ex-president John Kufuor is pleading innocence of the charge of assassination plot against the Editor of the Enquirer newspaper, Raymond Archer, and has dared his accuser to make the evidence available.Mr. Kufuor in an interview with Paul Adom Otchere on Metro TV's Good Evening Ghana programme, stated categorically that he, at no time in his eight years reign, did he hatch any plot to kill Archer or any critic of his government for that matter. His denial comes in the wake of reports contained in leaked US diplomatic cables, published by whistle blower site, Wikileaks suggesting Mr. John Kufuor had plotted to assassinate Raymond Archer for his incessant criticism of his administration.Archer accused the Kufuor administration of corruption and cited inferences to kickbacks allegedly made by former chairman of the NPP Harouna Esseku - an allegation consistently denied by the former chairman. On Tuesday Mr. Kufuor, reacting to the Wikileaks publication challenged Mr. Archer to provide credible evidence of any assassination plot hatched by his government against him (Raymond Archer). He dared his critics to cite one instance in his eight years tenure where assassins hounded perceived critics of his administration. But the editor of the Enquirer newspaper Raymond Archer insists attempts were made on his life.He told Joy News’ Sammy Darko he first picked up intelligence of people attempting to assassinate him from an Embassy he did not mention. That embassy, he said, claimed the president was upset and that some operatives in the Ashanti Region were trying to harm him.He did not take the information seriously until the US Embassy also revealed the same thing to him, he added. He then sought audience from business magnate Alhaji Asuman Bandah after which they both went to see President Kufuor at his residence for clarification. He said Mr. Kufuor denied the allegation but stated that some of his appointees were unhappy with some of his publications.According to him, security operatives under Kufuor’s regime were prepared to protect him but he declined.Asked if he believed president Kufuor indeed had a plan to assassinate him, Archer said he had solid information from two embassies and has no reason to disbelieve them.“The embassies had begun [investigations] and narrowed everything down to the president,” he stated, adding, Kufuor had told the US Ambassador that he, Archer had made too many enemies in his government and that if there was any plot at all against Archer, then it could be another person in his party but he (Kufuor) was not interested.
