The Forum for Governance and Justice is asking parliament to immediately investigate matters arising from the leaked US diplomatic cables on Ghana. It said the cables highlighted some serious allegations which must necessarily be probed. A member of the group, Clement Apaak told Joy News’ Fiifi Koomson that the partisan discussion of the cables contents makes it expedient for parliament to establish a bi-partisan committee to establish the truth or otherwise and for the appropriate sanction meted out where necessary. “I don’t buy that argument, (that we should put the issue behind us because of its potential to tear the country apart), that argument presupposes that we are a bunch of ignoramuses; are we saying that it is only those who have opened their mouths too loud to the Americans have the intelligence or capacity to lead our nation? Why? “If those who have been guilty and have been caught on tape on both sides should be fired by their parties and their government, so be it. And I am sure we can find very capable Ghanaians to replace them." The group also wants former Attorney General, Joe Ghartey, to be personally made to answer for some comments attributed to him in the leaked cables. They claim he confessed he knew some corrupt judges under his reign. So what does the leadership of Parliament make of this call for an enquiry? “If any good will come out of it, why not,” Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told Joy News on Thursday. He said the revelations in the cables are “not the best for us” as a country, stressing that Parliament would be all for it since anything positive that would come out “will inure to the benefit of the country”. He however called for a multi-partisan approach in addressing the issues raised.
