The Central regional Director of Communications for the ruling National Democratic Congress [NDC], Ben Allotey Jacobs says he is worried that the attitude of some of the party’s Members of Parliament may cause the party to lose votes in the 2012 elections. His comments were in reaction to a story published in the Thursday September 15 edition of the Insight Newspaper which indicated that the NDC could lose votes in the 2012 elections due to voter apathy. Speaking on Adom TV’s morning show, BADWAM on Multi TV, Mr. Allotey Jacobs cautioned both sitting and aspiring MPs of the party to sit up and connect with the electorates in order to ensure that the party retains its majority seats in Parliament. He recounted how voter apathy in the Ashanti region helped the NDC’s fortunes in the last elections in a region considered a strong hold of the opposition NPP. “What happened in the Ashanti region that gave us the victory even inspite of all the thievery should tell us that Ghanaians are discerning” he said. “The fact of the matter is that, most government appointees are becoming unnecessarily proud and in effect neglect their duties. Using the executive posture to undermine and forcibly go into the constituency to go and take the seat from sitting MPs could be dangerous. Let’s beware” he cautioned. Mr. Allotey Jacobs asked members of the NDC not to “dismiss this very publication by the Insight newspaper as ‘one of those’. Let’s analyse the content and ‘wake up’ before we are surprised in 2012”. He also urged incumbent Ministers of State who are aspiring to be MPs to humble themselves in order to win the hearts of their constituents since “ministerial positions do not guarantee votes’’.
