Constituency Executives in the Central Region have defended the disruption of a programme organized by the ex-first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
Macho men forcibly locked the Cape Coast Town Hall, venue for a meeting between the ex-first lady and her supporters which resulted in a scuffle.
Mrs. Rawlings, in line with her nationwide ‘Thank You’ tour was expected to show appreciation to members of the party who supported her during her flagbearership race but Cape Coast Constituency executives were not ready for any of that.
Executives of the NDC say the motives of Mrs Rawlings in organizing this thank you tour are disruptive and not honourable.
They had early on sent a message to the ex-first lady that she was not welcomed into the region and must take a detour to another region.
But Mrs Rawlings in keeping to her right to movement and association proceeded to the region to say thank you to her supporters.
Macho men however accosted the supporters and locked the Cape Coast town hall, venue for the event.
The National Organiser of Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR) Charles Opoku claimed they had paid for the venue and must be allowed to go ahead with their programme.
This culminated into a scuffle between members of FONKAR and some supporters of the NDC in the area.
Police personnel were immediately dispatched into the area to restore law and order.
In an interview with Joy FM’s Central Regional Correspondent, Richard Kojo Nyarko the Constituency chairman of the NDC in Cape Coast defended the action by supporters.
According to Elvis Amoase, he is not sure the message Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was about to deliver to her supporters but was convinced the comments would go against the party in the region.
He will therefore not sit down for the ex-first lady to come and make bad comments against the party in his region.
“We don’t know what messages will be delivered in there and if those messages become damaging statements it means it will cost the party and it is my responsibility to make sure that that is not done,” he said
He explained if the organizers of the programme had officially informed the constituency executives of the NDC about the event then at least he would have been aware who was attending and what statements were to be expected.
He said the action to disrupt the meeting was in the supreme interest of the party, adding the ex-first lady did not conform to the party’s rules and regulations before going ahead with the meeting.
Aide to the Rawlingses Kofi Adams described the incident as unfortunate. He said the reasons for disrupting the programme were untenable.
