The Savannah Women’s Empowerment Group, Ghana (SWEGG) has congratulated Hon. Samia Yaba Nkrumah on her election as the first female Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
The SWEGG, a non-partisan women's rights network advocating for improved status and welfare of women in Ghana, applauded Samia Nkrumah for occupying such an enviable position as a woman to lead her political party.
This well calculated move, the group said, will shore up the position of women in the current political dispensation of the country and Africa at large.
In a press release on Tuesday signed by its Coordinator Amina Montia, the group said Samia Nkrumah by this feat becomes the second woman in Africa to chair a political party after Madam Zanelle Magwaza-Msibi who was the chairperson of the Inkatha Freedom Party in South Africa.
The statement recounted the role of women in political activism in the country dating back to pre and post independence Ghana. It said women play crucial role in the Ghanaian society and there is ample proof of willingness and preparedness of women to participate in the political process as evidenced by the steady growth in numbers of women who run for political office.
“With the right level of policy commitment, it will be possible to address the gender imbalance in decision making and governance, as was experienced in the affirmative policy in education for northern Ghanaians and women's representation in parliament in the 1960s,” the statement said.
Samia's position today is a natural expression of confidence in women, the statement said adding; “We hope the election of Samia Nkrumah marks the beginning of a more gender balanced representation in all political parties.”
