The Chief Executive of the Chamber of Petroleum consumers is alleging the contaminated fuel which is supposed to have been sold off to ZupOil has found its way onto the market with dire repercussion to consumers.

Chief Executive Officer for the Chamber, Duncan Amoah has reason to suspect that the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) in transporting 5 million litres of the contaminated oil to Movenpiina and subsequently to ZupOil may have let out litres of the product onto the market.

Speaking to Joy News, Mr Amoah said his chamber has taken samples of what they believe to be contaminated oil bought from the market and will submit them for testing.

“Some complaints are very bitter. Others say their vehicles are behaving in a funny way. What they suspect is that products they have been served with might be part of the contaminated parcels being discussed,” he said.

He did not understand why the regulatory body, the National Petroleum Authority, did not conduct a thorough check on the volume of contaminated product released to ZupOil by BOST.

He said Ghanaians can only go to sleep if a voluminous check is done by the NPA on the quantities of contaminated oil at the disposal of ZupOil.

His comments follow similar sentiments shared by African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP).

The head of ACEP, Ben Boakye claimed to have bought fuel he suspects is contaminated and which nearly damaged the engine of his vehicle.

He could not immediately confirm if the contaminated fuel he bought is part of the 5 million liters of oil said to have been contaminated under the watch of BOST.

Speaking to Joy News the head of NPA, Alhassan Tampuli said in the interim what his outfit has found is that the quantities of contaminated oil released to ZupOil is not on the market.

He was however, quick to add that they are embarking on an audit of the quantities at the products at the disposal of ZupOil.

He said it will be pure conjecture for anyone to suggest the oil has found its way onto the market when that audit has not been completed.

Tampuli said the NPA is currently conducting the audit and will soon communicate the outcome of the audit to the general public.

He advised members of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers to provide the samples of the contaminated oil they have in their possession for examination.

The controversy over whether the contaminated product is on the market or not is the new twist to what has been a thorny issue over the past few days.

Over 5 million litres of oil at BOST has been contaminated in what officials say was as a result of “human error.”

The contaminated fuel was then sold off to a new company Movenpiina under controversial circumstances.

Movenpiina has also sold 2 million of the contaminated fuel to ZupOil, part of which some consumers alleged has found its way onto the market.

Even though the NPA is investigating the quantity of contaminated fuel at the disposal of ZupOil, the Energy Ministry has also set up a committee of enquiry to look into the entire controversy.
