Former President Jerry Rawlings says African countries are still far from attaining the unity espoused by Ghana’s founding president Dr Kwame Nkrumah.Citing the instance of the famine in Somalia, the former president bemoaned the lack of support by countries for member states which are in crisis.According to him, the continent can only attain the unity championed by Dr Nkrumah if African countries support one another.Kofi Adams, spokesperson for Mr Rawlings says Rawlings wants to see the AU Day commemorating Nkrumah's birthday used to advance the ideals of Nkrumah.“We hear leaders talk about ‘the world has become a global village’ but it looks more like as the world is becoming a global village, Africa is rather not closing its ranks; we need to close our ranks; we need to make sure that what affects one affects all and that he (Rawlings) has been challenging Africa that while we failed in Darfur, Sudan, we must not fail the people of Somalia this time round; we must prove to the world that even if Africa cannot do everything, Africa is ready to be seen to be doing something for its people,” he stated.
