Stakeholders in the aviation industry are worried about the frequent breakdown of baggage carousels at Kotoka International Airport.
Reports say only one of the conveyor belts functions at any given time. This often results in chaos at the arrival hall during peak periods. An aviation industry watcher, Daniel Frimpong told Joy News this has serious security implications and could jeopardize the nation’s fight against narcotic drugs.“What we are talking about [has] a lot of security ramifications. If bags from airplanes [are] sorted out manually, who has the eye to see between everything in the bag to detect whether there is an illegal drug?”Mr. Frimpong believes efforts must be made as soon as possible to arrest the situation because innocent people stand the risk of being framed by the bad nuts among airport security officials who scan the bags manually. He also said Ghana risks a ban from the International Civil Aviation Organization and this comes with economic repercussions. He added that if Ghanaian leaders want to extend the frontiers of the economy, then they must ensure that the Ghana Airport Company puts its home in order.
