The Tema Regional Office of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police Service, recorded a total of 1,100 cases between January and September this year.
The figure represents 21 per cent increase, compared to a total of 905 cases recorded during the same period last year.
Cases recorded included a total of 596 physical assaults, 33 rape cases, 112 defilements, 135 threatening and 17 indecent assault cases.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christine Yevunoo, Tema Regional DOVVSU Co-ordinator, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency, said the unit also recorded a total of 1,471 non-maintenance cases during that same period.
According to ASP Yevunoo, this include irresponsible behaviour of parents, such as failure to provide shelter, education, food, health care, pocket-money, school fees and other basic needs at home.
She said the total number of cases has increased due to routine sensitization workshops organized for the Public by the Unit.
ASP Yevunoo said the unit would continue to educate the public especially, religious groups, on the need to report such cases to the Unit.
She said lack of logistics, including means of transport, was a major setback to the operations of various DOVVSU units across the country.
