The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Dr Kwabena Adjei, has cautioned that although the party operates an open door policy, it will not entertain those who will open old wounds and generate acrimony to endanger the unity and survival of the NDC.
He described Dr Obed Asamoah’s comments regarding the founder position of former President J.J. Rawlings as unwarranted, provocative, and disturbing because the status of the National Founder of the NDC has been quietly put behind the rank and file of the NDC.
A statement signed by the NDC Chairman noted that the issue of the founder position of former President Rawlings was therefore a non-issue in the internal political dynamics of the NDC.
“The NDC National Founder’s status and position constitute an institution provided for in the 1992 NDC Constitution, no matter what wisdom formed the basis for that provision. We recognise and revere Fit Lt J.J. Rawlings as the National Founder of the NDC in a true democratic spirit no matter what differences exist between him and other members of the patty,” it said.
It said the leadership of the NDC believed that there were more strategic internal and external issues that currently confronted the party, requiring the collective efforts of all to ensure that unity and survival of the NDC and that the pettiness and acrimony that characterised the futile dispute about the party's national founder and the founding of the NDC.
It added that the National Executive of the party had been working steadily behind the scenes to build the party's image as an internally democratic and tolerant party since 2006 and under very challenging circumstances.
“It is, therefore, most objectionable that these image building efforts of the NDC leadership could simply be nullified or reversed with the simple issuance of statement and comments attributed to Dr Obed Asamoah of the DFP fame”, the statement added.
It said more disturbing about the current controversy was the wrong timing dimension.
It said so far the process of the DFP joining the NDC was under consideration, which had been handled in a democratic manner based on a route that originates from the location of the NDC Functional Executive Committee through the National Executive Committee and congress.
“It is therefore premature and completely unacceptable for a statement that touches the core of our internal party unity and peace to be made at this crucial time - one year to elections - by Dr Obed Asamoah who is yet to undergo a litmus test for rejoining the NDC,” the statement added.
It said the NDC believed in numbers, and would genuinely welcome members from other political parties as well as those hitherto non-partisan who were making decisions to join the NDC and that those from the DFP should not be those to encounter any obstacles in their attempt to rejoin the NDC.
