Airtel Ghana is to introduce its e-commerce service that will allow customers to use their mobile phones as mobile wallets.
Dubbed Airtel Money, the service has enhanced features that will not only aid customers to make payments and transfer funds but to have access to services available only in banks.
With this mobile wallet, customers can also send and receive monies from their bank accounts, manage their accounts via their handset, pay utility bills, purchase goods and services and transfer airtime across networks.
During a media experiential session on Wednesday, where journalists were taken through processes in utilizing the service, Mr Luck Ochieng, Sales Director of
Airtel Ghana noted that the company “has a track record that is unrivaled in mobile telecommunications for delivering relevant and innovative mobile solutions to help customers overcome their daily challenges.”
“Our goal as a telecoms company is to make communications, banking, payments, retail and infotainment affordable and accessible to all in Africa and especially in Ghana through Airtel Money.
“We have created safety by initiating a cashless society where one can make direct purchases with e-money instead of the actual exchange of real money from one source to another.”
The Airtel Money service is compatible with all handsets and customers will not need to swap sim cards to register for it.
Like Zap from Zain, There is no security risk in using the Airtel Money service since it works with a pin number or password. When a customer loses his cell phone, whatever amount of money on it would remain intact.
Currently, Airtel Money is partnering with Standard Charted Bank (SCB), United Bank of Africa (UBA) Zenith Bank, Ecobank Ghana, Databank Brokerage Limited, Multichoice and some leading supermarkets.
