The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli West, Mr Alban Bagbin, has declared his intention to contest the upcoming primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in order to maintain his seat in Parliament.
Mr Bagbin, who has served as both the Minority and Majority leader since Ghana returned to constitutional rule in 1993, is considered as one of the most experienced parliamentarians in the country.
He is one of the few Members of Parliament (MPs) who have not lost their seats and hope to return to the House during the next Parliament to serve his sixth term.
He told the Daily Graphic that he had contributed his quota to both his constituency and the country to warrant another term in the House.
Mr Bagbin stated that parliamentary democracy in the country stood to gain a lot should people who had experience be given the chance to use their accumulated knowledge to advance the course of the current political dispensation.
“We cannot sell the cow and buy a chicken,” he said, explaining that the situation whereby people clamour for a change simply because someone had been in Parliament for long was not the best for parliamentary democracy.
“Such a situation is not too good for our democracy”, he said, adding that the worth of an MP, his contribution to both his party, Parliament and the country as a whole, should be taken into account during primaries.
“I have served my people well and hope that they will give me the nod both during the primary and the general election to serve them once more In Parliament”, he stated.
