As a Ghanaian, born in 1939, Nkrumah could be the President of Ghana today if he had understood the British Allan Burnse constitution. Unfortunately, he created his own constitution which led to his demise.
Since Nkrumah, no leader has been so smooth, smart, and intelligent. He could have been recalled to be the President. He missed the point. Politics is only an open sore to be nursed by good women.
He was so good that he convinced me in a radio talk show to change may name from Patrick Kofi Agyapong to Kofi Agyapong. Discard the foreign names, he said, you loose your identity.
The next day, I dropped Patrick and ceased to be associated with the name Patrick. The Irish are good people but not better than the Africans and no Irish has an African name.
He changed his name from Francis Kwame Nkrumah to Kwame Nkrumah. I was a secretary of the CPP in my town Afrantwo and all the young people belonged to the CPP while my father and older people were members of the UP for Busia.
Initially, all was well, the two party system was working well until we attained Republic in 1960 and Ghana became a nightmare for some opposition leaders. What happened in Ghana can only be understood by Ghanaians who want the best for Ghana and Africa.
Nkrumah had dual personalities. As a Ghanaian, I grade him "F". As an African, I grade him "A ++". Ghana is not Africa. Ghanaians are Africans if and only if they are willing to work for Africa as a country. So, Rev. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah got confused using Ghana as Africa.
Ghana is one of the smallest countries in Africa, how come we were so vocal? Was it because, we had plenty of money 700 million pounds and Kwame used it foolishly or wisely on African politics!!
If he really understood Africa, he would have laid a foundation for the future generation to implement Africa Unity. Many years after OAU, we still do not have Africa Unity. Why, it is because, even the present leaders like Kufuour, do not really understand that it takes a political will to create a UNITED PEOPLE.
Hence, since our founding fathers did not lay a solid foundation for our political unity, we will have difficulty uniting our states and our people. We will continue to subsidize Europe with the importation of Goods and services from European countries.
Can you imagine the many Francophone countries all stopping import from France? Think of it as one main reason why France invaded Libya the champion for Africa Unity. If Africa Unties, Europe will starve. Unemployment will skyrocket in France especially and in Europe in general. Now it has full employment for we continue to import into Africa.
Most Africans are confused between the role of the states and the role for the potential UNITED STATES OF AFRICA government. Actually, the UNITED STATES OF AFRICA will be a government with limited powers given to it by the states. The states will have all the powers.
But what is surprising to me was how Nkrumah wanted the rest of his contemporaries to UNITE with him to form OAU while he was destroying and imprisoning his own country men. Did he really think the other Africans are fools and they did not know what he was doing to Ghanaians? Was really that naive?
