Seven traders arrested for allegedly selling unauthorised drugs were Monday fined GH¢96 each, or serve two years in imprisonment with hard labour.
The accused persons include Tawiah Nador, Asmah Jonathan, Emmanuel Edinam, Fati Osmanu, Michael Appiah, Yaa Serwah and Amuel Opare. The accused persons were caught selling aphrodisiac, cobra cream, AK 47, USA langge, crocodile pomade and hip up cream.
They all pleaded guilty to the charges of selling unregistered drugs, contrary to section 18 (l) of PNDCL 305B of 1992, and selling drugs on unregistered premises, contrary to section 31 of the Pharmacy act 1994 - act 489, before the court, presided over by Mrs. Patience Mills Tetteh.
The facts of the case are that on February 11, 2011, a team consisting of personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Customs Excise and preventive Service, Food and Drugs Board, Pharmacy Council and Registrar General Department Mounted an “Anti Counterfeit Medicine” exercise in the Accra Metropolis and Tema.
According to the prosecutor, ASP ESS Koranteng, during the exercise, the accused persons were found selling various kinds of drugs at the Ashaiman lorry station. He said the medicines were found not to have been registered by FBD for human consumption.
“The accused persons were also found not to have registered, licenses to deal in such conditions and environment. They were arrested and the quantities of medicines were seized,” the prosecutor added.
